DUPLICITY:  A Reality?
Examining the Real World of Corporate Counterintelligence
Thursday, May 14th, 2009      Haynes and Boone, LLP
3:30PM – 5:30PM
Happy Hour Networking Session – Luna Del Noche
Following Program

Program Description
Duplicity - A Reality?

In the movie “Duplicity” Julia Roberts and Clive Owen play former CIA and MI6 spies applying their “talents” within two rival corporations and thus entails a quintessential game of cat and mouse. Is this situation a typical Hollywood fantasy or is it more common than we think?
While companies continue to lay off their workforce, inadvertently they may be greatly increasing their risks for corporate espionage. Employees under threat of dismissal may be more inclined to take proprietary information and make it available to the highest bidder. Corporate IT departments struggle with an increase in Internet threats, compliance with growing regulatory requirements; all while understaffed with insufficient budgets to provide adequate security measures.

In light of the present recession, desperate times call for desperate measures. How safe is your company’s intellectual property?

Join us on May 14th as we hear what Rod Coward of the FBI has to say about the increase in industrial espionage cases, enforcement of the Economic Espionage Act, and what companies can do to protect their information.

Speaker
Roderick "Rick" Coward is a consultant with the Dallas FBI office's Counterintelligence Domain Program, which is a liaison outreach effort to the private business sector and universities.  This program is involving the business community in prevention and prosecution of trade secret theft, which is often the focus of foreign intelligence operations.  In his spare time he has been seeking a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies, which included further study in the Arabic language.

Mr. Coward previously served with the FBI in a variety of counterterrorism counterintelligence roles, and was involved in a number of high profile investigations, including the Khobar Towers bombing, Atlanta Olympic bombings, and was the FBI's On-Scene Commander in Bagram, Afghanistan in 2005.
