Getting to Know the Unknown Unknowns:

Scenario Analysis & Industry Transformation

Kodak had one of the most recognized and powerful brands of the world. The “Kodak Moment” remains synonymous with meaningful photo opportunities. Recent times have not been kind to the company, however. Kodak entered Chapter 11 in January 2012, leading a wide range of pundits to declare that Kodak had missed the digital boat and question why the company didn’t see the shift to digital coming. This shorthand misses the critical lessons from the Kodak experience that can benefit all industries in our era of rapid transformation and uncertainty.

Scenario analysis is a method of developing views of the future based on understanding of how social, technological, economic, environmental and political trends and uncertainties will play out and intersect to drive transformation. Organizations can use scenarios to design strategies that optimally balance focus and agility. They can create their own future by prioritizing the changes they need to drive and the risks they must prevent. Finally, scenarios enable leaders to develop contingency action plans and early warning systems to anticipate rapid shifts in their market.

During this interactive boot camp, we will lay out an adaptable and accessible scenario analysis technique. We will look at an industry facing fundamental transformation on multiple fronts today and apply lessons we can learn from the Kodak experience to anticipate and prepare for fundamental transformations. Participants will break into teams to develop their own scenarios. Based on those scenarios, the group will identify critical actions, contingency plans and early warning systems.
