DAY 2 - Setting up the CI Function
Facilitator: Erik Glitman, CEO, Fletcher/CSI
This bootcamp will cover the key elements of setting up and operating a CI function in three parts which cover when to start a CI Unit, how to grow the unit, and unit operations. The goal of the boot camp is to help participants will gain a better appreciation of what it takes to run an effective CI unit and deliver effective CI to stakeholders.
Part I - This part of the session focuses on the early development stages of a CI unit, including what typically triggers creation of a CI unit and how to grow the unit. Other aspects that contribute to an effective CI unit that will be covered are how to identify stakeholders and determine what those stakeholders need from a CI unit, actions that contribute to longer term sustainability for the unit, and how to build a network for information sources, including establishing relationships with service providers.
Part II - This second element moves from the initial triggers and phases of operation into growth and long term success for the CI unit. This will cover how to stage service and capabilities growth in areas such as analysis tools, research support, and budget. Matching growth to demand, and creating demand, will be covered. Other elements explored in this part are how to increase sophistication and breadth of coverage for the unit, leveraging internal resources to expand resources without increasing budget, and integration of additional tools such as Win/Loss, Trade Shows, Strategy Sessions, M&A support, and benchmarking. During this part, discussions on how to set budgets and build out a technology backbone, including types of technology platforms that are most useful for the CI unit will be reviewed.
PART III - In this element discussed tools that help manage CI activities with a specific focus on building Key Intelligence Topics and Key Intelligence Questions. In this element, a review of the organizational structure, types of staff members needed, along with the skills and personality types that are most effective in a CI unit are discussed. This aspect also covers issues around third party support, including why and when to engage a third party, the types of third party support that are most effective, Budgeting practices, including how to allocate budgets between internal, external, and IT support will be reviewed. Other areas covered include how to use the CI cycle to manage CI projects and increase demand for CI across the company.
The bootcamp will also review how to staff the CI unit with an emphasis on the skills and personality types needed, and circumstances where a third party can add value. The role, and function, of the CI cycle and how it relates to operating a CI unit will round out the session. A brief CI unit budget with key categories will be provided as a guide.
