The Analytics of COVID-19

The reaction to the new coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic is a classic example of Prospect Theory. Humans are predictably irrational in when facing uncertain prospects. In particular we don’t like the risk of loss.

This discussion focuses on what we can know, and what we might expect. In addition, information from a new national poll of the American public, their reactions, their fears, and how different segments of the public are reacting will be discussed.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Humans are predictably irrational and the COVID-19 epidemic brings out those tendencies
  • Prospect Theory suggests when we focus on potential losses, we will miss opportunities
  • We can actually make some well educated assessments, but the math of epidemics is tricky and most commentators don't grasp how even simple contagion calculations are done.
  • Understanding the basic math model can help us lower our health risks and improve our business positioning
  • The American public reaction is not monolithic. Different segments are responding differently and the dividing lines are not political. Political pundits who frame everything along party lines in an election year miss the important demographic forces at work
