Measuring Return on Investment (ROI) for Competitive Intelligence Programs 

One of the biggest challenges of leading a competitive intelligence group within an organization is clearly articulating the value the program provides to the organization as a whole. ROI is one measure of financial value, but it is difficult to link the work done by the competitive intelligence team to a financial metric. A start is to gain an understanding of the expectation that stakeholders outside the program have for the team. Analyzing, measuring, and reporting things such as time savings, cost avoidance, new business generation, M&A activity, and increased profit margins are examples of ways to promote the value a competitive intelligence program can bring to an organization.

Laurie Young
Laurie Young is the Director of Competitive Intelligence (CI), Competition Differentiation at Lone
Star Analysis. She has been in the CI field for over 30 years, working in the government and commercial industries, and has supported over 500 competitive engagements. Ms. Young is the Lone Star lead for strategic Black Hats and has participated in and/or facilitated over 150 Black Hats.

Prior to joining Lone Star, Ms. Young was the Senior Analyst in CI and business development with Raytheon. She worked in global market intelligence, leading competitive analysis and win/loss efforts at EDS. She established an Alum debriefing program there. Laurie was the senior member of a team of analysts who assessed industrial and governmental issues at Battelle Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio. She founded their CI program for the government business sector. Ms. Young began her career with the US government as a Political Analyst in 1982. She left the USG as a Senior Manager in 1991.

Ms. Young is on SCIP’s Board of Advisors. She has been the Chairman of the Dallas SCIP Chapter since 2014. She has participated on industry panels and provided training webinars on CI tools. Ms. Young is a newly elected Advisor to the Lone Star Chapter of National Defense Industry Association (NDIA).

Ms. Young holds a BA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a MSFS from Georgetown University.
