Mentoring Program: 5 Reasons Being a Part of a Mentoring Program Can Help Move Your Career Forward

1. Advice: There is nothing like good advice from people who share your career path. Whether you’re new to your job, or have been with the same company for many years, sometimes you just need advice on office politics, how to present a problem to your boss, or maybe you need to hear how someone else dealt with a similar work problem, or solved an issue.

2. Motivation: What gets you going? Seeing and hearing about the success of other people with the same goals can be a huge motivator. A word of encouragement from someone you respect can also go a long way on getting yourself in gear to move on to the next challenge.

3. Direction: Where do you see yourself in 1 year or 5 years? Maybe you are working towards a Certification within your field. Set a goal and map your path to get there. Discuss options for online courses and conferences. Mentors can help you seek out trusted sources of education and the best conferences to attend.

4. Coaching: Mentors can be great coaches. They can help you focus on concrete issues, such as managing more effectively, speaking more articulately, and learning how to think strategically. Your mentor can help you to develop these skills.

5. Support: Although specific learning goals or competencies may be used as a basis for creating the relationship, its focus goes beyond these areas to include things such as work/life balance, self-confidence, self-perception, and how the personal influences the professional.
